Technology Requirements

If you have a basic computer setup with Internet access, chances are you won’t need any additional hardware or software to be an online learner at JIU.

Our courses are compatible with both PCs and Macs. Please refer to the following table for our technology requirements:

*Note: The registration portal at my.jiu.edu may not function properly if you are using a non-supported browser. Recommended browsers include Internet Explorer 6 and Safari 1.2. All other JIU websites including the My Courses/Dashboard pages and JIU courses support most modern browsers. Recommended browsers include Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.

Technology Requirements — Doctorate

Internet Access

  • The Doctorate Program will utilize technologies that require Broadband Internet access (DSL, Cable, Satellite, etc). If you are currently using a dial-up system, you will need to look into upgrading to a broadband connection. Contact your local Internet Service Provider for installation. Please note that installation can take several weeks.

Hardware Requirements:

  • USB 2.0 port

Minimum System and Operating Requirements:

  • Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2

  • 1.5 ghz Intel, PowerPC or equivalent processor
  • 500 MB of RAM

Software Requirement

  • Microsoft Office 2003 (PC) or Microsoft Office 2004 (Mac)
  • Additional software will need to be purchased upon acceptance into the program

An easy way to check your browser and plugins is to use the JIU Browser Checker, an application that will automatically check to determine whether your browser and plugins meet the requirements for JIU courses.
