BC352: Fundamentals of Business Writing

Overview

This course provides techniques and strategies for writing effectively and efficiently. Elements of writing in a business environment are explored with the help of the following exercises:

  • Writing resumes that reveal winning qualifications
  • Creating emails that convey the right information with the right tone
  • Writing proposals that attract notice
  • Summarizing information and creating short reports for managers and decision makers

The course project, Business Writing Portfolio: Producing Clear, Concise Business Communications, is a compilation of writing reference materials that can be used in a business environment. Each student will produce an inventory of different documents along with a journal of reflections about their writing experiences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Use the components of effective writing to develop well-written business documents.
  • Create mind maps and outlines to use in expanding ideas into effective documents.
  • Evaluate word choice, sentence structure, and verb use as they relate to effective business documents.
  • Write a resume using the appropriate format for the type of information presented.
  • Use different writing tools to ensure effective and efficient documentation preparation and composition.
  • Determine the proper situations and effective patterns to use in writing business documents such as e-mails, memos, letters, summaries, short and long reports, and online writing.

Prerequisites

Students should take BC352 for their first course and BC355 for their second. They may also be taken together if desired.
