The primary mission of JIU Bookstore Services is to assist you in the selection of required materials and ensure their availability to our students and faculty.
Through our partnership with MBS Direct, the official bookstore of JIU, we are committed to providing quality products and services that support students, faculty and staff in the online learning environment.
We participate in the University’s commitment to support each learner’s success with responsive, caring service, relevant, readily available and student–centered services for a geographically dispersed adult body by:

Bookstore Policies
Book Vouchers
Book Vouchers must be submitted via a policy exception form by an Admissions Counselor (AC), with approval from their manager. The policy exception is then submitted by the AC to the Academic Appeals Committee for approval.
Complaints/Problems
- Students must first contact MBS Direct, JIU’s official bookstore, at 800.325.3252 before submitting a complaint to their ASC. (Military students do not need to contact the bookstore prior to submitting a complaint to their ASC.)
- Problems unresolved by MBS can be escalated to the ASC who will submit the complaint to the Materials Coordinator via the Issues and Complaints form to bookstore@international.edu.
- Students must submit bookstore/materials problems to their ASC within one calendar year of receipt.
Shipping
When ordering books, students must allow time for shipping, JIU will not be responsible for upgraded shipping if course materials do not arrive prior to the first day of the course.
MBS Refund Policy
Course materials must be returned within two weeks after class start date or within two weeks of date received (by the student), whichever is later.
- New course material must be returned in new, unopened condition in order to receive a full refund
- All components of a packaged item must come back together, unopened and in the original shrink wrap to receive credit.
- Loose leaf items must be in the original shrink-wrap.
- CDs, diskettes, Info Trac pass codes (Internet pass codes included with your textbook) and software included with a book or sold alone, must be intact and in the original packaging or it will be non-refundable.
- Books damaged in return shipping may not be eligible for full refund.
- Electronic content like access key codes, eBooks, etc. are non-refundable. Shipping costs are non-refundable.
- Electronic content is non-refundable if downloaded. If you have not downloaded the item and are within the two week return period, please contact our customer service department at VB@MBSbooks.com or 800.325.3252. International phone number is 573.441.9179.
International Book Orders
Guidelines for Ordering Books for International Students/Faculty
When ordering through MBS Direct, JIU’s official bookstore, international students may have the following shipping options depending on the destination. Note that customs and brokerage charges may apply upon delivery of books by any of these options. Also, additional time to clear customs may be necessary. This is intended as a quick reference guide to international shipping.
Please note that these options are subject to change by UPS (United Parcel Service of America) or USPS (United States Postal Service). Please check their websites for changes to these shipping options. Pricing and options vary by country.
UPS Express—2-3 days
- Delivery by 10:30 a.m. or noon
- Delivery by the next business day to Canada and for documents to Mexico
- Second business day delivery to Europe and Latin America
- Delivery within two or three business days to Asia
- To 45 countries and territories
UPS Saver—2-3 days
- Delivery by end of day
- Next business day delivery to Canada and for documents to Mexico
- Delivery in two business days to Europe and Latin America
- Delivery in two or three business days to Asia
- To 215 countries and territories
UPS Expedited—2-5 days
- Delivery in two business days to Canada
- Delivery in two or three business days to Mexico
- Delivery in three or four days to Europe
- Delivery in four or five days to Asia and Latin America
- To more than 60 countries and territories
UPS Standard
- Will not guarantee a time until you schedule delivery
- Ground delivery – have to schedule shipment to get a time estimate
- Between all Canadian provinces and the 48 contiguous states
- Ideal for less-urgent shipments to and from Canada
- Door-to-Door services
- Up to three delivery attempts
UPS Postal
- Goes UPS to the dock where it leaves the country and then is shipped by USPS
- Delivery takes 2-6 weeks
- This option does not allow tracking
Other Important Details

- Military APO’s (Army Post Office Box) and FPO’s (Federal Post Office Box) can only use United States Postal Service (USPS).
eBook Facts
Electronic books (eBooks) are sold through MBS Direct, JIU’s official bookstore, located online at bookstore.mbsdirect.net/JIU.HTM. Once an eBook is purchased, an email will be sent to the user with directions on how to access the econtent. (For questions about purchasing or problems with a purchase of an eBook, please contact MBS Direct at 800.325.3252.)
eBook Facts
- Before viewing the eBook a reader must be downloaded. The reader required depends on the format the book was created in. (See the information below about eBook formats.) The eBook reader must be downloaded only once.
- To access new eBooks in the same format, download the book’s content to the bookshelf in the reader
- Remember to download the eBook on a computer that you intend to use when accessing the book (for a course)
- A high-speed Internet connection is required to download eBooks
- Duration of access to eBook varies by publisher
- Allowances for printing of eBook content vary by publisher
- Military students should consider Internet access and bandwidth before ordering an eBook
eBook Formats
eBooks are available in the following formats: VitalSource, Coursesmart and Adobe.
- VitalSource allows two downloads of the eBook to different locations. (For example, the eBook can be downloaded to a work and home computer.) The user can insert notes and share notes with others who have the eBook.
- When a Coursesmart book is purchased, the student selects to use the book in either an online or downloaded format. (Most of these are a 180
day subscription.)- Online Coursesmart books can be viewed from any computer.
- Downloaded Coursesmart books can only be downloaded once and viewed on the computer to which the book was downloaded.
- Functionality of Adobe is limited. No ability to take notes or highlight sections of content.
