DM 203: Audio Recording, Engineering and Editing

Overview

This course builds skills in the technical side of handling audio recordings. It will teach the student how to record audio at the proper level to ensure good quality. It will demonstrate the need to maintain high-quality standards as the audio is manipulated. The student will learn the techniques used in audio editing. The concepts of editing audio into a story will be explained as will the ways in which various pieces of audio are laid together and mixed to produce the story. A study of the ethics of fair and honest recording will top off the course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Record and manipulate audio recordings, improve the quality using gates and filters, and edit it and several other pieces of audio together to make the final story.
  • Learn the ethical considerations of moving sound bites about, changing the context but taking care not to change the meaning of the words.
  • Demonstrate an ability to maintain high quality standards during manipulation and editing of an audio project.
