EDU-NB 801: Using Video Evidence to Improve Teaching Practice

Overview

The purpose of this course is to use a classroom-based video of interactions between you and your students to complete Entry 2 or Entry 3 of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification process. This course is intended for current and future National Board candidates or those wishing to improve their practice by applying the National Board Standards.

The course will focus on identifying learning strengths and challenges of the individual students in your class and implementing a variety of brain-based, gender-based, and collaborative teaching strategies to address individual student needs. Participants will describe, analyze, and reflect on evidence of student learning in a classroom-based video recording.

During the course of this class, you will plan a lesson or a series of lessons that provides evidence of standards-based instruction, appropriate pedagogical strategies, and accomplished teaching standards. You will learn how to describe, analyze, and reflect on recorded evidence of your teaching utilizing different instructional strategies.

The course project involves submitting a classroom-based recording and completing a Written Commentary that includes identifying intended learning outcomes, describing teaching strategies, providing the research base for pedagogical decisions, analyzing student learning, and reflecting on the impact on student learning.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is based on Five Core Propositions, which provide a framework that teachers can follow to ensure they continue to improve their practice. Teachers have clearly defined standards for accomplished practice and these standards can serve to guide the development of accomplished teachers. Participation is this course will help you improve your teaching by helping you apply accomplished teaching standards in your classroom.

While this course provides valuable information and strategies that will be helpful in your pursuit of National Board certification, it is not a guarantee that you will achieve certification. The requirements and assessment of your performance in this class is different than the assessment of your entries, possibly resulting in different results.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Develop and teach a lesson that utilizes a variety of instructional strategies (brain-based, gender-based, collaborative learning) that meets the needs of students.
  • Analyze a recording of teaching practice relative to accomplished teaching standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of accomplished teaching standards of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
  • Describe, analyze, and reflect on teaching practice relative to accomplished teaching standards.
