Middle and secondary educators can no longer simply consider themselves teachers of a particular content area like math, science, literature, or history. Instead, they are being challenged with teaching students how to read, write, and interpret information in the content area they teach. This is a major paradigm shift for middle and secondary teachers, one that means teachers must adapt day-to-day instruction to more effectively meet the needs of their students.
The purpose of the course is to assist the educator with the leap from theory to practice and to enhance present knowledge in reference to this process. Content of the course includes teaching models, teaching strategies and approaches, and the application of personal and cognitive developmental theories. Also, the course provides assessment and feedback on original curriculum designed by program participants.
NOTE: This course is available in 8-week and 16-week formats. In the 8-week format, students complete one module per week. In the 16-week format, students complete one module every two weeks. The 16-week format is for Induction students only.
