EDU 796: Ethical Leadership

Overview

The EdD advisory board researched professional association, accrediting body, and government standards and recommendations to develop a program of learning that maximizes each student’s professional development as a leader. The board adopted the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) model standards as the framework for defining meaningful leadership learning objectives. The board found that the ISLLC model standards are comprehensive and align with professional association expectations (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education), accrediting body expectations (Higher Learning Commission), and government regulatory expectations (state and federal).

In brief, the ISLLC standards outline the essential knowledge (understanding), dispositions (beliefs, values, and commitments), and performances (processes and activities) necessary for effective leadership in the field of education. These standards were drawn from research on effective education leaders and the collective knowledge of education leaders from state education agencies and representatives from professional associations of educators. The EdD advisory board shares the Consortium’s commitment to raising the bar for the practice of school leadership. Although EdD students come from varied backgrounds and move into varied roles and responsibilities, we are confident that all graduates are exceptional education leaders.

In EDU796, students demonstrate their ability to promote the success of all learners by acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze and evaluate ISLLC Standard 5.
  • Develop, with his/her cohort, a “Compelling Ethical or Moral Dilemma at a School” and describe it in detail.
  • Analyze and evaluate his/her personal leadership characteristics by designing a “matrix of ethical leadership strengths and challenges” drawn from ISLLC Standard 5.
  • Analyze and evaluate his/her current leadership capacity against ISLLC Standard 5.
  • Analyze and evaluate current and relevant literature on ethical leadership regarding his/her personal strengths to build from or challenges to address against ISLLC Standard 5.
  • Develop a sound resolution (or resolutions) to the ethical or moral dilemma that your cohort chose.
  • Reflect on your resolution against ISLLC Standard 5.
