IT 102: Introduction to Computer Information Systems

Overview

This course will provide you with an introduction to the field of computer information systems.

In order to understand computer information systems, it is important to look at the history of computers and information systems, as well as current and future technology. In this course, you will have an opportunity to become familiar with the hardware, software and technologies related to networking and e-commerce, digital media, e-commerce, systems analysis and design, as well as programming. In the course project, you will configure your "dream" computer system, either for your home or office.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Select an internet service provider based on an analysis of costs and features of two providers.
• Select a computer protection tool based on an analysis of anti-virus utilities and create a backup plan to safeguard your computer from malicious attacks.
• Select the best digital still and/or video camera to meet your needs based on an analysis cost and features of at least three camera models.
• Configure an ideal computer system (hardware/software, including email, Internet access, file management, virus protection, etc.) for personal or business use.
• Demonstrate the ability to apply the steps in the SDLC to the configuration of your dream computer system.

Course Requirements

4X CD-ROM or faster Sound Card Pentium II MMX enabled or equivalent (Mac Users: PowerPC processor G3 or later) QuickTime 4.0 or later installed on your machine.
